Wondering how to have a sustainable wedding?

Read on to learn about one way you can have a more eco-friendly wedding!

Green weddings are increasing in demand and popularity as we become more aware of our impacts on the environment around us. However, that doesn't mean you need to lose the style elements you've been dreaming of! There are many ways to make your wedding more environmentally friendly!

The answer? Sustainably sourced flowers! In particular, local flowers, however in Utah we know that isn’t always possible!

Why do flowers come up as a topic so frequently when you read about eco-friendly weddings? First, they are something that you can easily swap out for a whole variety of beautiful items! Second, from an environmental standpoint, many flowers use high amounts of pesticides, nonorganic fertilizers, and are shipped from out of the country. However, that doesn't mean all flowers do! Your local flower shop very well may grow their own flowers when the season allows and get flowers from California, Texas, or Florida when the season doesn't. So don't write off your local florist just yet! Help reduce your carbon footprint by sourcing your flowers from a Utah Local Florist.

If you aren’t able to use local flowers, we suggest using companies that are organic or pesticide free! Getting certified organic is very expensive for a company to do, so look for keywords like pesticide free, organic fertilizers (the larger fertilizing company pays the big fee instead!), grown sustainably, etc. However, you’ll want to read more about them to make sure they are a reputable source.

One other reason we love to buy local flowers? It just feels so much more personal! Being able to see the farm where your florals grew, just makes them that much more meaningful.

Here are some local florists we recommend!

Heather Griffiths from Wasatch Blooms

Heather works with our go to florist, Native Flower Company to put together beautiful wedding florals! We love doing wedding events with the Native Floral team and you add these stunning locally grown florals!? How could it get any better?

Wasatch blooms also has a summer flower share that means you get flowers delivered weekly to your home! She also provides Growers Buckets that are the perfect DIY floral activity. If you’re a bride on a budget, this could be a great option for a budget-friendly wedding!

One of our favorite ways to do florals on a budget is using terrariums! These are perfect for shorter events or cool weather weddings. Check out her Instagram for your seasonal doses of beauty: @wasatchblooms Give us a follow too while you’re at it!

Heather Dawn from Bloomed Life

Heather, a girl after my own heart, loves roses. She always has and always will! Since my middle name is Rose, I’ve also always had an affinity for roses. Heather has been working on creating Utah’s first large-scale field-grown garden rose farm since 2019. Heather not only grows roses, but she provides wonderful classes on creating lettering, jewelry, and floral centerpieces.

You can find Bloomed Life at farmer’s markets such as Wheeler Sunday Market and Saturday Downtown Farmer's Market. Heather works with a variety of preferred florists across the Salt Lake Valley!

Copper Moose Farm Flowers | Park City

Copper Moose Farm in Park City, primarily focuses on their vegetables, however, they also have a beautiful selection of flowers! They caught my eye when they explained the details of their farm practices. I am an avid gardener and a total soil nerd. Anyone else? I have a background in conservation and sustainability….so you’ll always find me explaining a random detail about sustainable farming!

They have a farm stand throughout the week where you can pick some of these up. If you are wanting to use them for an event, I suggest reaching out in advance! They also offer a flower CSA during the summers. Flowers and fresh veggies every week? Ahh don’t you love summertimes!

We oftentimes have out of state brides who have destination weddings in Southern Utah. Even though we are based in Salt Lake City, we are fully equipped to do weddings around the state (and Wyoming and Idaho!). One of the ways that we can do these beautifully catered events is with having great local sources like Freckle and Flower Farm!
